Facade Cladding Systems: A Complete Guide to the Right Choice

A building's facade is far more than a decorative surface; it is a critical envelope that determines the structure's energy performance, durability and long-term value. When the right facade cladding system is chosen, the building is protected against rain, sun and heat loss while preserving its architectural identity for years. Natural Stone Cladding

Applied with materials such as travertine, marble, granite and andesite, natural stone facades offer a prestigious and lasting appearance. The greatest advantage of natural stone is its lifespan and texture; when installed with correct mechanical fixing systems, it serves flawlessly for decades. In projects such as Beymed Eye Hospital and Alkent 2000 Villa, we have seen how natural stone reinforces both corporate and luxury perceptions. Its drawbacks are weight and material cost, which require the load-bearing structure to be engineered accordingly.

Aluminium Composite Panel

Composite facade applications use lightweight panels formed by a mineral-filled core sandwiched between two aluminium sheets. With high flexibility in colour and form, this system delivers a contemporary look on commercial and corporate buildings. On reference projects such as the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce facade cladding, we experienced how composite panels can be applied quickly and evenly over large surfaces. Fire-resistant A2-class panels should be preferred; safety standards must never be compromised for the sake of economy.

Curtain Wall

A curtain wall is a non-load-bearing envelope of glass and aluminium profiles suspended from the main structure. For high-rise office buildings and plazas where maximum daylight and transparent architecture are desired, the curtain wall is the ideal solution. On projects such as Zümrüt Plaza, we had the opportunity to apply curtain wall systems for both aesthetic and energy-management benefits. Combined with thermally controlled glazing, it significantly reduces cooling loads.

Mechanical Fixing and Ventilated Facades

Most modern facade systems are fixed to the structure through mechanical mounting, using concealed or visible clips, anchors and profiles. At the heart of this approach lies the ventilated (rear-cavity) facade principle. The air gap left between the cladding and the insulation layer provides the following benefits:

  • Discharges heat through the chimney effect in summer, lowering surface temperatures
  • Drains condensation and rainwater ingress, strengthening waterproofing
  • Reduces thermal bridges and improves energy efficiency
  • Protects the insulation material from external factors, extending its life
  • Allows damaged panels to be removed and replaced individually

Thermal Insulation and Waterproofing

Whichever system is chosen, facade performance depends on the insulation detail behind it. When ventilated facade systems are designed together with insulation boards such as rock wool or XPS, they create an envelope that both insulates and breathes. In waterproofing, joint details, drip edges and membrane transitions are critically important. The right choice depends on the building's function, height and budget. For prestigious corporate buildings and luxury villas, natural stone offers lasting value. On large-surface commercial structures, composite facades provide speed and design flexibility. Where transparency and daylight are priorities, the curtain wall stands out. In most projects these systems are combined to create hybrid solutions.

What Determines Facade Cladding Prices?

Facade cladding prices cannot be reduced to a single square-metre figure; material type, panel thickness, the complexity of the mounting system, building height and scaffolding costs all shape the total. Natural stone generally requires the highest initial investment but offers a lifetime-cost advantage thanks to its longevity and low maintenance needs. For sound budgeting, the facade should be viewed as an investment and engineered following a site survey.

Maintenance and Longevity

Periodic inspection is essential to preserve facade performance. Joints and sealants, anchor points and drainage channels should be checked once a year. Natural stone surfaces are protected against staining with suitable impregnation, while composite and glass surfaces retain their original appearance with regular cleaning.
